I have trouble with say vs. tell. Could you please give me some suggestions, and internet sites.

'I say' + 'to' = 'I tell':

1. MrPedantic said that he was about to log off.

2. MrPedantic told me he was about to log off.

3. MrPedantic said to me that he was about to log off.

'Saying' is the act of speech. 'Telling' is the directing of the act of speech (towards someone).
