The major themes throughout the story are pride and humanity, because all of the brother's actions taken towards Doodle are not purely kind, these actions are mostly for the benefit of his own pride. But Doodle looks up to his brother, and is ashamed to let him down. For humanity, the brother never shows humanity towards Doodle, but treates him indifferently and is (later on in the story) ashamed of his behavior towards his brother. Also, try to find a quote about pride or humanity to use in your introduction. Hope this helps, and good luck!

Just a hint to all you clueless kids..... Use Quotes! Quotes make a great essay.
If you cannot already see that the scarlet ibis symbolises doodle... than maybe you should request to go into a lower grade level...
You guys probly need a theme to huh...? Here you go:
"people always suffer when others try to make them over in their own image" (354)
Another hint: Ask your teacher next time if you need some help
Funny thing is... Im having trouble with my essay on this too but i hope i helped all you out there

The narrator's (also known as his big brother) younger brother, Doodle, was born an invalid who could only crawl. Time passes and Doodle becomes five. The narrator then decides to teach him how to walk out of embarrassment that his brother couldnt be normal. After weeks of practicing, Doodle learns how to walk, and the family rejoices. After a while the narrator, feeling infallible, decides to teach Doodle to walk, run, swim, climb trees, and fight. They go tho the "Old Woman Swamp" to work. His grueling work shows little progress as the deadline he sets gets closer. Finally, after an encounter with a Scarlet Ibis dying, Doodle and the narrator set out to the swamp for one final attempt to yield results and Doodle fails. As a storm approaches they start to make their way back to the house. Angrily, the narrator begins to walk faster than Doodle. When Doodle falls behind, the narrator runs off leaving him. Soon he calms down and waits for Doodle, who doesn't show up. Walking back, he finds Doodle curled up next to a bush, dead and bleeding scarlet, which was exactly like the Scarlet Ibis.
Throughout the story the narrator is only referred to as brother.
Doodle's encounter with the scarlet ibis is very symbolic in this story. The narrator himself says "How many miles had it [the bird] traveled to die like this, in our yard, beneath the bleeding tree?". This is almost exactly how Doodle ended up dying, with everyone thinking that he would never live right from the start, and then no one believing that he would ever be able to walk. He had gone so far, only to die a tragic death, symbolized in the Scarlet Ibis's death. No one ever gave Doodle credit, they just thought he would die and never achieve the goals he had for himself.

Dude how old are you? Drop english now in my opinion. Anyway, the theme of the story is pride and the narrator of the story is ashamed of Doodle so when he wants Doodle to do something his "knot of cruelty" kicks in and he starts to push Doodle.
