When I decided to go back to college in 2009 after being absent for three years, I found myself in a critical dilemma. I was uncertain of what to major in. I decided that I should select a major related to business and initially chose Accounting as my first choice. After being accepted to San Diego State University from Mesa Community College, Accounting did not seem as appealing as I once thought. I looked through SDSU’s list of majors of the College of Business Administration and found out more about the Information Systems major. Being a tech-geek at heart, the descriptions of the major appealed to me instantly. At the age of eleven, I learned how to develop websites with HTML; and a couples years later, I was managing several reputable websites. Technology and computers therefore naturally interested me. Upon further research, I determined that Information Systems is the right major for me; and with this scholarship, I will be able to pay for my basic expenses so that I can complete my program free of financial burden as well as cover the costs of the Project Management Certification program I want to enroll in. Being a tech-geek for most of my life, Information Systems was intrinsically appealing to me. I have always wanted to work with computers and other technology since I first used the internet in 1995. I was fascinated by the technology as it allowed me to access any publicly published information at any time. The internet provided a new way of conducting research, business and many other means of processing and storing information. A technology rarely works solely; it often is paired with other technologies and I enjoy learning how they all work together. The computer, whether it is an iPhone, laptop PC, or Kindle Reader, is the hardware that enables us to use the internet. I also love technology because there’s always something new. While many may find staying updated with the dynamic technology industry as a burden, I find it intriguing. Though there is always a learning curve for new technology, I love learning new things because there is always something coming out that is better. Better and newer technology allows us to do things that have never been possible. I am constantly keeping up with new technologies and without it, I would be bored. Technology is everywhere around us and it is only continuing to grow and improve. Because of my deep understanding, passion, and appreciation of the way technology is used to make life easier, I declared myself as an Information Systems major. Information Systems is not limited only to technology. The study of Information Systems is learning how to apply technology to business functions to improve its effectiveness and efficiency. As somebody who has frequently worked on teams both at work and school, I often find myself falling into a leadership role. I am naturally a leader and work well with others. I also tend to analyze the way systems work and always seek better ways to do things. Because of my critical thinking and analytical nature along with my management and communication skills, I believe I have exactly what it takes to be successful in administrating a business. I have also always been intrigued by business and entrepreneurship and all of its functions. I have been exposed to a wide range of business functions and requirements through my collegiate studies and believe my knowledge in accounting, marketing, economics, and management would be a great complement to technical skills. After all, all major businesses today require information systems. A career in Information Systems allows me to combine my two passions: technology and business. Information Systems is a career focused degree and there are many career opportunities that practically combine technology and business. Careers include network administration, software engineering, systems analysis, and project management. The career paths I will pursue after earning my degree is systems analysis. Systems analysts provide value to businesses by suggesting, developing, and implementing technologies to improve business processes which is essential in the competitive business environment. Systems analysts work in teams compiling of highly technical-oriented employees, the programmers and network architects, and highly business-oriented employees, the accountants, executives, and salesmen. They must also often interact with the end-users who often have no technical knowledge. The role of the systems analyst therefore is to bridge the gap between technology and business. Successful systems analysts must possess a wide range of skills that include technical, business, analytical, interpersonal, management, and ethical skills. I believe I have all of these are the exact skills that I possess. Though I have been performing exceptionally well academically to make my dream of being a systems analyst come true, I am struggling financially. As a student coming from a low-income family, I knew that going to college can be a financial risk. I also know, however, that once I finish the program, I will be in a much better financial situation as this degree will open up many opportunities for me. With 14 months of college left before I graduate, this scholarship will help me cover my basic expenses of attending college. It will cover transportation, food, and housing costs. If I earn this scholarship, I will also use the money towards enrolling myself in a Project Management Certification program. The program, at $1,599, will help prepare me for the Project Management Professional (PMP) exam. The program will help advance my knowledge in systems analysis and project management as well as make me more marketable in the competitive workforce. As I am starting the second half of my junior year, I am confident in the major I declared. Information Systems allowed me to apply my two interests in my studies, and hopefully in the near future, my career. Businesses are what drives the economy and technology is what makes it all possible. My passionate interest for both technology and business will help me succeed in this competitive field. If I earn this scholarship, the money will be used to cover my basic living expenses and allow me to focus on my academics. As I pursue a career in systems analysis, I want to continue developing my skills by enrolling in a Project Management Certificate program, which would also be covered by the money earned by this scholarship. With 14 months left of college, I am closing near the start of my dreams; and with this scholarship, my dreams will be closer in my grasp. Thank you for your consideration. New Member 02 | |
