What is the difference between selfsame and same?

Dictionaries tell us that selfsame = exactly the same.  Which implies that same is not necessarily the same, but can mean just 'very similar'.  Selfsame is also rather poetic or dated-- you won't hear speakers using it much.  Perhaps this is a signal that nowadays no one is willing to say that two things are exactly the same.
