"When these switches were electromechanical, their features were few and such as there were—primarily pickup and hold—were on keys that connected to a central unit over bulky 25-pair cables."
Kindly help me in clarifying the meaning of this sentence. Can this sentence be restructured?
Thanks and Regards.

These keys used to be electromechanical and their main features were pickup and hold. These features were on keys that connected to a central unit over bulky 25 pair cables.
