The injured were sent to hospital for treatment.

The word 'sent' is not correctly used, IMO. It should be replaced by 'taken', shouldn't it?

It could be either. It depends on the point of view of the speaker.

Are they thinking about the hospital taking charge and collecting them - so taken, or someone at the original place taking charge and arranging for them to go to the hospital - sent. Are they thinking about the collecting end or the sending end?

It doesn't make any real difference.

This reminds me of a terrible headline for a short article that appeared several years ago in a newspaper:  "Man hit by train rushed to two hospitals"

Right.  And, if the speaker is a worker at the hospital, 'brought' would also be a possibility.
