Sentence correction

Hi,

I was having a chat with someone and wrote the undermentioed sentences. Althought they seem correct to me, but I am not so sure.

"Thanks a lot Dreamer! Frankly speaking, I have seen what institutes teach you at their classroom sessions, and really I was not much impressed. PY was an exception, reasons being they have maintained such a good site and the fundamentals described there are done so in such a thoughtful manner that one can't resist learning them. But as you said, the time and travel both are major issues. "

First reason is that I started with present perfect and then moved to past. Is it correct?  "I have seen what institutes teach you at their classroom sessions, and really I was not much impressed".

Second reason is  that I started off with past tense "PY was an exception," and then moved to present perfect beacuse the reason still holds true "reasons being they have maintained such a good site". Is it okay?

Third is I have used "described" in " the fundamentals described there are done so in such a thoughtful manner that one can't resist learning them", I have omitted "that are" from " the fundamentals that are described" and made the above sentence and it does sound correct to my ears.

Just want a second opinion on my writing. Do point out mistakes in the whole post if there are any.

Thanks,
Rahul

Sorry, I did not get you.

Your tenses are fine, but I really strugged to understand "what institutes teach you at their classroom sessions."

I think you mean "what is taught by institutes in their classrooms" and eventually I got that meaning, but I'm not sure.

Personaly, I find "reasons being" to be sloppy or slang-y. Just say "PY was an exception because they..." It could be that it's commonly used elsewhere.

I'm not sure what you mean about the whole passage - are you referring to actual classrooms, or distance learning? What does the "good site" have to do with it?

Anyway, your understanding of tenses seem fine to me.

Thanks a lot Grammar Geek! Yes, you have got it right. That's what I intended to say. If I had provided the context of the conversation it would have been a lot simpler to understand what I meant. I had this conversation with a friend of mine who had (or has as he is still enrolled there, don't know which one to use) joined a coaching institute for an exam. I am also preparing for the same exam and also had had/taken the coaching for the same in 2004. So, I was telling him my view on the coaching.

By the way, is it wrong to say "what institutes teach you at their classroom sessions."? I guess 'at' should be replaced by 'in' but is there anything else wrong with this sentence and is the personification of institutes wrong?

Kindly mention if I have made any mistakes in the above paragraphs.

With Best Regards,
Rahul

I eventually got that meaning, but see if you can see how I first read it as "which of the institutes teach "elcid"..." and then I got confused. I expected the subject matter that was taught to follow the verb "teach." I teach Spansih, she teaches quantum physics, the insitute teaches you...

It's not mandatory that the structure work that way. There are are many examples of sentences like "I'll teach you how to ..." or "It taught me how to..." but that's how I read it at first.

Now that you have mentioned it it does seem confusing. Surprise
Thanks a lot GG(Hope you don't mind my calling you GG Wink)! You are my hero!

Call me anything you like! I'm glad it was helpful. However, tense, which is a major obstacle for many, seems to be no problem for you.
