Moments later, the chopper's runners touched down on a brown grassy strip a couple of hundred feet from the lake.

(1) May I interpret this sentence as "...grassy strip that is located a couple of hundred feet from the lake."?

(2) What is missing between "strip" and "a"?

It's technically not the grassy strip that is located a couple of hundred feet from the lake, but the point where the chopper's runners touched down. The grassy strip could be 1,000 feet wide with one of its borders right at the edge of the lake; but the chopper touches down a couple of hundred yards from the edge of the lake.
