Hi,

1. There are a lot of motivations I'd say 'for' rather than 'to encourage' to encourage students to get a high grade on the exams.

2. Mots graduate schools in the United States require that international students' TOEFL scores be over 250.

3. A boss decides whether his company continues to employ someone based on his job performance.

4. A struggling company chooses to merge with another one in order to save personel costs, resulting in large-scale layoffs.

5. What parents do most for thier children is provide education and encouragement.

6. I strongly support that, where a decision must be made between supporting the arts and environmental protection, the latter should take priority.

7. One way I am able to improve my community is by volunteering to teach English to those who need it most.

Best wishes, Clive

Clive, if I may? It's "most" in 2., and "their" in 5.  Smile [:)]  (I know these are typos!)

Two minor adjustments on Clive's--

4. A struggling company chooses to merge with another one in order to save personnel costs, resulting in large-scale layoffs.

6. I strongly urge that, where a decision must be made between supporting the arts and environmental protection, the latter should take priority.
