Hi,

Thanks, Clive. I hope I can ask a couple of questions.

3. He started his journey early but still didn’t get there on time.
[off] Despite ……………….. late.
a. Despite setting off early, he still arrived late.
b. Despite setting off early, he still got there late.
Despite starting off early, he still got there late

Why "starting off" instead of "setting off"? Does it convey the idea of a journey? (I thought it simply meant "to begin".)

I'm not quite clear about your sentences 5 and 6  ... not only did you change the given sentences (by deleting "completely" in sentence no. 5 and adding "many" in sentence no. 6), you also didn't use the words in bold (respectively, "expected" and "cared"). Smile [:)]
How about these?

5. We were bowled over by the news as we hadn’t thought we would win an Oscar for the film.
[expected] Not ……………….. an Oscar for the film, we were completely bowled over by the news.
Not having expected (that) we would win an Oscar for the film, we were completely bowled over by the news.

6. This car will give you many years of service if you care for it properly.
[after] Properly ……………….., this car will give you years of service.
Properly looked after by yoy, this car will give you years of service.

Many thanks again!

Hi,

(I thought it simply meant "to begin".) It depends on the context. Here, it seems pretty obvious that it relates to a journey. However, 'setting off' is also fine.

I'm not quite clear about your sentences 5 and 6  ... not only did you change the given sentences (by deleting "completely" in sentence no. 5 and adding "many" in sentence no. 6), you also didn't use the words in bold (respectively, "expected" and "cared"). [expected] Not ……………….. an Oscar for the film, we were completely bowled over by the news.
Not having expected (that) we would win an Oscar for the film, we were completely bowled over by the news. Yes, sorry, I forgot that you had to use 'expected'. That's fine. 'Completely' is also OK. I was just thinking about the fact that it wasn't in the original sentence. I don't know why it got added.
6. This car will give you many years of service if you care for it properly.
[after] Properly ……………….., this car will give you years of service.
Properly looked after by you, this car will give you years of service.

I don't see the word 'cared' in bold, I see the word 'after' in bold.  'Looked after' is fine as a synonym for 'cared for'. It's bit hard to use the word 'after' if you have to start your sentence with the word 'Properly'.

'Many' is OK. I just forgot to include it. It doesn't make much difference to the meaning.

Best wishes, Clive
