Hi,

Can you separate the following  sentences like the example I gave? I am trying to get some clear ideas as to what preposition is needed and in what situations.

eg,

The apartment is very dilapidated.

He lives there (in that apartment).

The apartment in which he lives is very dilapidated.

Sentences to separate for the benefit of clearing seeing a need for the use of 'in' in both situations:

This is the way in which this situation will fan out.

Share your heads in mourning for the children in whom you delight.

This is the way in which this situation will fan out.

1. This is the way.

2. This situation will fan out in the way.

------------

Share your heads in mourning for the children in whom you delight.

1. Shave your heads in mourning for the children.

2. You delight in the children.

Hi guys,

A situation doesn't fan out, it pans out.Smile [:)]

I believe it's derived from the idea of panning for gold, where you swill gravel around in the pan and see what the final result is.

Thanks, Clive, for the reminder, but from the little context, I thought a situation could add up to alluvial deposits/soil/plains fanning out or spreading out from an estuary.
