Hi

Whites sometimes complain that they can’t understand why the Aborigines don’t want to settle down in pretty little houses with lawns and hedges, and why they can’t seem to settle into working 40 hours a week in factories or offices.

--- Does "settle into" here mean "adapt" or "adjust"? They don't want to adapt to a 40-hour working week?

It means those things, with the connotation of "comfort". It's hard for them to be comfortable changing their lives.
