Jonathon Green mentions this meaning (in his Slang Dictionary) as being Mid-19C+, and it's still in usage, as shown by the urban site. Thus, it must've been valid in 1954, the year of the song.

But it seems that in the song (which was cleaned up several times for sexual references), it might be related only to the rattling of pots and pans:
