Hi guys,

This passage is for 1st-year students. Could someone please edit it for me. Thank you in advance.

The firemen have arrived to fight the fire, which is spreading quickly.

They used their hoses to spray water on the fire. One of the firemen heard a child crying. He used a ladder to enter the flat through the open window to save the child. The crowd cheered when they saw the fireman climbed down.  As he was carrying the child down the ladder, they cheered.

Soon the fire was put out. The firemen then left in the fire engine.

Hi,

The firemen had arrived or arrived to fight the fire, which was spreading quickly.

They used their hoses to spray water on it. One of them heard a child crying, so to save it he used a ladder to enter the flat through the open window. The crowd cheered when they saw him carrying the child down.

Soon the fire was put out and the firemen left.

I've just editted it for good English, not for what is suitable for the level of the students. Perhaps you can decide better about that?

Best wishes, Clive

Should you perhaps write this in one tense only? Present tense for a sense of immediacy; past tense as a reportive narrative?

Clive is correct in changing the first sentence as follows:

The firemen had arrived or arrived to fight the fire, which was spreading quickly.

It was a careless mistake. I wanted to use the past tense throughout.

Before I forget, I have to thank Clive for his editing of the composition.

And I would like to thank you for your suggestion.

Best regards
