Hi everyone,

I'm planning to apply for a MA course in European Politics and  have to give further information in support of my application. But although having lived in the UK for half a year, I'm still not sure if my English is appropriate. That's why it would be really great if someone could check my letter of motivation (and highlight my mistakes). Thanx a lot in advance!! (never done that before, hope it works! *g*)

Further information in support of my application

I am a motivated student at the University .....  and about to graduate this year. Aiming at an international career in the field of the European Union, I would welcome the opportunity to participate in the Euromaster’s Programme offered at the Department of European Studies and Modern Languages. Having done my Bachelor’s Degree in European Cultural History and thereby endeavoured to combine different European traditions and politics, I am convinced that the Euromaster’s programme suits both my intellectual background, my interests and my ambitious professional targets. I feel that my knowledge of European Culture, History and Politics, which I acquired during my three years of undergraduate studies in ..... and ....., will help me to understand different aspects of European politics, Europe’s external relations, and the political systems of individual European countries, as well as socio-cultural European issues. In an intellectually rigorous training in European Cultural History, Contemporary History, European Studies, English Literature and Political Sciences I have acquired a broad knowledge of different European matters like politics, history, culture, languages and literature. As my studies in ...... were very much focused on interdisciplinarity, I strongly believe that I am able to understand the major trends in contemporary European and international politics, economics and society in an interdisciplinary approach. Furthermore, my foundational skills and specific knowledge necessary to analyse European developments and to undertake research and study at an advanced level with great success, as well as my skills in analysing and interpreting complex information and presenting arguments and conclusions effectively both in writing and orally, make me a suitable candidate for the M.A. programme in Contemporary European Studies: Politics, Policy and Society with Transatlantic track.

Studying Contemporary European Studies is especially rewarding for me because I see it as an excellent endorsement  to my undergraduate studies and it will definitely help me to understand the vast global changes, which have been taking place in the cultural, technological, economical and political sector. The concept of studying in up to three different nations attracts me very much as it offers the opportunity to engage with scholars and practitioners from various European countries and institutions and will enable me to deepen my cultural knowledge of different cultural circles. The international aspects of my current studies reflect my great interest and curiosity in global education and foreign languages, and my broad travelling experience in diverse countries all over the world and my studies at the University of ..... evoked my interest of studying in different nations and strongly enhanced my confidence of living in a foreign country. It furthermnore shows that I am able to express myself in other languages and easily adapt to new situations. As I am able to speak German and English fluently, and because I have a good level of French and Italian as well as basic knowledge of Portuguese and Japanese, I feel that this course is especially appropritate because it enhances my language abilities. Moreover, I know how to deal with cultural differences due to my leading role in the ERASMUS-programme at the University of ........

I am very attracted by the Euromasters programme because it offers exactly the courses I am eager to learn about, such as European Politics, Policy and Society and this at internationally recognised leading universities. My work placement at the German National Parliament provided me with professional work experience in the field of politics and enforced my desire to do my M.A. in this area. As I anticipate a job in a wide range of careers, including academic, professional, commercial, diplomatic and governmental positions, I believe that the programme will enable me to pursue my career aspirations and will enable me to work in the type of employment that I am seeking.

After an in-depth search on the internet, I have come to the conclusion that the University of Bath with its special course offer will completely live up to my expectations of postgraduate studies. I am aware that the standards will be very high, and that workloads will be demanding. However, I think that I have always proven that I can cope with a huge workload and high pressure, which can be seen by my broad array of extra-curricular activities, which were, as well as my university studies, very demanding and occupied much of my time. Furthermore, I believe that the small classes, the careful attention toward the individual student’s needs and aspirations and the excellent teaching quality will compensate my hard work.

I am convinced that my envisaged studies will provide me with a structured, systematic approach in order to understand international political, strategic, economic, social and cultural issues in Europe and in the United States. As you will have noticed, I have a deep interest in international matters and I am also very curious to study in different cultures and different languages as I am ambitious to learn more everyday. I hope that I was able to show you that I am aware of the consequences and hardships, but also the benefits and profits which your graduate programme offers to me and I am sure that my genuine interest in other peoples, other civilisations and other ways of life will make my graduate Euromaster studies a wonderful and rewarding experience.
