Silver life
( by Attila Jozsef , translation by Peter Szabo, 2003)
Don’t be bad to me, if I’m bad now,
If now I live little more silently,
More silent are the clouds at dawn,
And the dead, and fields are not flowery.
To win is just as nice as roses in full bloom,
But I’m hanging about aimlessly,
Or I’m listening to the rain in my room,
Frightened as at thunder is the sea.
Even if the winners will still be you,
Silvery will be your big heart,
Your flag will fade to silvery too,
Once victory too will tear you apart.
Tumult of battle will silently come,
Silvery life will come to you too,
Clouds are living silently now,
Silent dead and fields will look at you.
