Are both of these sentences grammatically correct?
"Many
people did not consider him to be a true (nationality) since his family
emigrated to (country) in the early 20th century."
"Many
people did not consider him to be a true (nationality) since his family
had emigrated to (country) in the early 20th century."
I
definitely prefer the 2nd sentence, my only question is if the first
one is (more or less) correct as well. It's really more of a question
if that one is strictly speaking grammatically incorrect.
