Simple Spelling Rules:

I searched the Internet for "Spelling Rules", and came out with the followings, which I thought to share with you:

P.S. I would appreciate if any moderator could check these rules, and decides if they are worth to be published, or to be erased from the forum.

1. Whenever adding 'full' to words, we write it 'ful' (single l) [help : helpful, etc.]

2. Whenever adding 'ly' to words, we simply add 'ly' not 'lly' [great : greatly, increasing : increasingly, etc.] Also for words ending with 'l' we add 'ly', so it becomes 'lly' [general : generally, gradual : gradually, etc.]

3. Whenever adding prefix at the start of words, the word doesn't change [understand : misunderstand, satisfied : dissatisfied, agree : disagree, etc.]

4. When to write 'ie' and when 'ei' ?
If the word is pronounced as ee (such as cheese), it is 'ie' (Except if the character preceding the 'e' is 'c', then it is 'ei') [believe, receive, etc.]
if the word is pronounced as a (such as air), it is 'ei' [heir, neighbor, etc.]

There is some exceptional words for rules 5 & 6, which need to be learnt individually.
Firstly, vowels are : a, e, i, o, u (Moderators, please correct me the list of vowels, as I searched too much, but not sure of this list, thanks)

5. Added endings (suffix) to words having silent 'e' at the end of them:
I concluded that the general rule is to avoid 2 vowels coming after each other. Based on this rule, drop the 'e' or keep it.
[replace : replacement :: no dropping to the 'e', as the added suffix starts with non-vowel]
[replace : replacing :: dropping the 'e', as the added suffix starts with vowel]

6. Added endings (suffix) to words having 'y' at the end of them:
The 'y' is to be converted to 'i', except if the added suffix is 'ing' or the character preceding the 'y' is a vowel.
[happy : happiness :: the 'y' converted to 'i' as the added suffix starts with a non-vowel]
[toy : toying :: the 'y' is kept 'y', as the added suffix is 'ing']

7. Advise with 's' is a verb, while advice with 'c' is a name. The same for practise / practice.

Thanks again moderators

Best regards
