The word is 'clever'.

The word is "clever".

Which is the correct way to punctuate the above sentence? Should it be single or double quotation marks? Do the British and the Americans punctuate differently with regard to the above?

In British English you should reserve double quote marks for speech and use single marks for other purposes.
