trousers is / are
sunglasses is / are
jeans is / are
knickers is / are

How can I distinguish them ?
When a dictionary says that a particular word hasn't got the singular form then we use 'are' or 'is' ?

Thank you

As an American English user, I would use "are" for all of those.
