Idioms, colloquialism and slang may be difficult to distinguish for ESL learners.  Be careful when using them.  It’s always important to learn a language the proper way first.  I personally feel that learning slang for the sake of understanding it is fine but I won't to use it just to be “cool”.  I believe people do judge you by how you articulate and the way you use your words.   As others pointed out, if you don't understand it, don't loosely use it.
