If we are going to totally ban smoking then we should ban alcohol.  Sorry, if you don't agree but there are laws that state you must not drink and drive but how many people do it anyway. ALOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Drunk drivers kill people every day

It's a paradise for smokers: you can do it everywhere really-cafe,restaurant,school canteen, ferry boat, nightclub, street, even McDonalds...

So I hardly feel like outcast'

If a smker wants to ruin his health let him do it. But why should I suffer. One can hardly find a pace without a cigarette smoke. If the action is harmful to the people around it should be banned. Let THEM smoke in special places. Not the non-smoker look for a place to hide from the smoke!

I'm of the opinion that the UK Government has overstepped the mark with its legislation.  I agree that smoking should rightfully be restricted in public areas where people have no choice - public transport, for example.  However, in the case of bars and pubs, and especially private clubs, I really do think that the decision on whether or not smoking is allowed should rest with the owner of the venue. After all, no-one has a statutory right to be in a bar or pub - you are there at the owner's discretion and if the owner says smoking is allowed, then you don't need to stay if you don't like it.

Interestingly enough, the UK Government exempted the bars of the Houses of Parliament from the legislation saying that the Houses are classed as a Royal Palace (which is true) and therefore don't come under the classification of 'public place' and not obliged to implement the ban there.  I'm not sure if they changed their minds about that, but, the fact that they did it in the first place speaks volumes.

I wish Turkish Government did the same... I am not a smoker, but wherever I go (and I mean everywhere) I have to let smoke in my lungs. I have a right to not smoke and they are violating it. Because of them, my health also gets damaged. And passive smoking considered to be even worse! If they want to poison themselves, they can do it at the outside.

For the record the law went beyond what the Government proposed. It was Parliament on its own initiative that came up with the present rules. It was a reminder that while the Government rules it is Parliament that legislates.

To Tidus, Does your government forbid smoking in any public place, even in bars? We have special areas for smokers and for others in any cafe, but as far as public wc are concerned - it is a madhouse!!!!In the morning I wear good smell of french parfum), and after attending that place it is replaced by smoke....sadly...
