Hi,
It must be exam time in Turkey, we are getting a lot of exam-related questions.
1-The examination was going to be held ..........December 15,1995.
.ther answer is "on" and I gave the right answer but one of the options was "by" and I thought this could be also. Am I wrong?why? You're right. 'By' would mean 'no later than'.
2.If the necessary precautions are not taken , We............ a scarcity of electricity by 2000.
a) will face b) will have been facing the answer is "b" , why not "a" ? Are you sure you typed this one right? A is clearly the answer. We'll overlook the fact that this is 2005. B involves quite a contortion of context.
3.Derek is said to have owned a cottage near the Channel.
a) everybody said that Derek used to have a cottage near the Channel.
b) people say that Derek has had a cottage a cottage near the channel
c) people say that Derek had a cottage near the channel.
the option c was not included in the options I added it. the answer is "b" Why not the others? A is wrong because of 'everybody'. B is OK. C seems OK to me, too.
Best wishes, Clive.
