Is a related word anything that is close to the word in question?
For example "an applicant" Are all of these related words: "to apply, applicants, application etc."
Or are there some rules which words are related words to a certain word? (I hope that you'll understand what I mean)

I know that it's maybe hard to understand what I mean.

I meant that my task is to make as much related words as I can and an applicant was one of the words.

 There are three possibilities for related words:

1-- Applicant:  apply, application, applicable, etc

2-- Applicant:  candidate, recruit, etc.

3-- Applicant:  job, interview, selection, etc.

You'll have to ask your teacher which is intended.
