'Today the EU consists of many different countries. Recently new Eastern countries such as Hungary have become members of the EU. There are many concerns: jobs for young people, workers with special skills, easy travel, easy communication, the euro, big and small shops, communication in foreign languages, many companies moving and machines replacing workers.
First, countries which are part of the EU offer the possibility to young people of finding jobs. A lot of young people need jobs.
Second, many European countries need workers who have special skills, for example, people who specialize in IT.
Third, there is a huge increase in transport of people and goods. Travelling has became easier, so employees can easily reach their workplaces. For example, if a manager travels in the morning to Rome he can be back home [in Paris] in the evening.
Fourth, communication is easier. People can communicate with European business partners within a short time. So business in Europe can operate better. If you want to write someone, you can send a digital letter by fax or email. These letters are sent in a short time to your partner.
Fifth, most European countries share a currency – the EURO- so trade is made easy. That is favourable (vorteilhaft) because the currency no longer needs to be converted.
Sixth, many small retails shops cannot compete with big supermarket chains and outlet stores in other European countries. A lot of people buy their products in big supermarkets because they get more products there, and in a small shop there is a smaller selection. The small shops do not get enough income and must close down.
Seventh, for many people it is difficult to communicate in a foreign language, so they do not want to move from their homeland.
Eighth, many companies move their production to other European countries to reduce the production costs. Furthermore, they do not have to pay high wages or be so concerned for security and safety standards of workers.
Ninth, a lot of machines have replaced workers. Machines are better for companies than human workers, because machines can work faster and cheaper; they can work 24 hours per day and work more accurately. A lot of workers who have worked a long time at a company are no longer needed.
In my experience, the EU can work. Many European countries need workers who have special skills, for example, specialists in IT. IT programmers do not have to travel to another country. They can edit their software at home or at their companies in their homeland.'
