Farrant, a humourist who straddles the seemingly contradictory worlds of domesticity and surrealism. What passes for normal can sometimes be quite bizarre, and Farrant sees through the thin veneer (or is it thin ice?) to the chaos beneath.

What does straddle mean in this context? Of the 7 meanings from dictionary, I venture the 3rd: apply to more than one thing?

1. sit or stand astride something
2. extend to other side of something
3. apply to more than one thing
4. spread legs apart
5. sit or walk with legs apart
6. U.S. favor both sides: to appear to favor both sides of an issue
7. military fire shells for range:

.

Yes, #3 seems to be nearest-- or this from Princeton's Wordnet:  range or extend over; occupy a certain area; "The plants straddle the entire state".

'The question is,' said Humpty Dumpty, 'which is to be master-- that's all.'
