I need a help with, I guess, a kind of southern vernacular. This is a quote from the book, said by an old African American who used to batter his wife:

''My wife, Eileen. I used to go at her something bad.''

I'm confused with 'something bad'. Can anyone help me, please?

In BrE we use 'something rotten' or 'something terrible'.

It means to an extreme degree - he used to beat her badly.
