He is far/way more sophisticated than he lets on.

I think sophisticated means (having good knowledge about people's culture/fashion/behaviour). Am I  right?

Also, please explain `than he lets on'.

You are pretty much there with sophisticated. It means someone who is cultured/educated/knowledgable
  1. Having obtained worldly experience, and lacking naiveté; cosmopolitan.
