I was just told from a friend that I must have 2 spaces after a period. Is that correct?

That certainly used to be the rule and as someone who learned to type a long time ago it is a habit I still have. However, the current thinking, now we are all whizzing along on computer keyboards, is to only use one.
I don't think it is really going to make much difference either way.

No. Only one space. The tradition of using two spaces after a period was caused by the fact that, when using a monosyllabic typewriter, a single space doesn't show the transition between two sentences clearly enough, and so two are necessary. However, when you're using a computer, a single space is sufficient - most web browsers will eliminate any extra spaces, anyway, and Microsoft Word is set to automatically change double spaces to single.
So, if you're using an old typewriter, then, by all means, press space twice - otherwise, just one will do!
Although, that having been said, I always press space twice - old habits die hard!
