Spanish vegetables

Leaded by the unemployment rate the highest in Europe (21%) and growth in a poor state of Spain did not need that. The ban, in several European countries, to import Spanish fruit and vegetables – or just cucumbers – as a result of food poisoning and deaths attributed to the presence of a strain of E.coli is a major blow for the country, including the fruit and vegetable production represents about 2% of GDP.
The situation is even worse is that she experienced as an injustice felt by Spanish farmers since doubts were cast on Wednesday, the origin of the poisoning. Germany – The first country to have reported cases of death – has indicated that cucumbers produced in Spain were ultimately not in question. A rebound pushing Madrid to consider seeking compensation in Berlin for the damage done to its farmers.
Because the damage is done. “Now there are supermarkets in Germany have put a sign ‘Here we do not sell Spanish products,’” laments Jorge Brotons, President FEPEX, the largest union of Spanish growers. It evaluates to 200 million euros per week the shortfall caused by the crisis, because “hundreds of tons of products that we throw.”

In Spain, the fruit and vegetables was so far one of the few to have been relatively unscathed by the recession. Vegetable exports earned more than 9 billion euros last year, an increase of 3% over 2009, according to the annual report of the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture published last March. And alone, the sector accounts for nearly 300,000 jobs in the country. The economy of some regions depend very heavily: in Murcia or Almeria province, for example, over 60% of the production of fruits and vegetables for export, against 33% nationally. “These are regions where it also shapes social life,” reads the website of the FEPEX.

The first sentence of the above sounds odd to me.
Leaded by the unemployment rate the highest in Europe (21%) and growth in a poor state of Spain did not need that.

It says Spain's unemployment is 21%.
However, to write 'Leaded by the unemployment rate ... sounds odd to my ears.
It has written the words ' poor state of Spain did not need that'.
What is it?

Hi,

The initial sentnce makes no sense. There are various other problems in the article that make me wonder if it was written by a non-native speaker.

Hi,

I can't find who runs the site. But anyway, it's not a well-written article.

Some 3,000 people have been taken ill with the German outbreak of E. coli, which involves a previously unknown strain of the bacterium.

Sufferers may develop haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) where bacteria attack the kidneys and nervous system, giving them fits and often forcing them on to dialysis.

'Hot lead'
"People who ate sprouts were nine times more likely to have bloody diarrhoea than those who did not," Mr Burger said.
Germany's top disease control official said the origin of the contamination was still believed to be the small organic farm in Lower Saxony which first came under suspicion at the weekend.
"The links are ever clearer - it's a hot lead," he told reporters in Berlin, at a joint news conference with the heads of Germany's federal institute for risk assessment and federal office for consumer protection.
He said it was possible that all tainted sprouts had now either been consumed or thrown away, but he warned the crisis was not yet over.

We say, for example, I got a bloody headache, bloody toothache, etc.

Now look at the following sentence of the above:
"People who ate sprouts were nine times more likely to have bloody diarrhoea than those who did not," Mr Burger said.

My question is on the word 'bloody' in the sentence. Has it the same connotations of 'bloody' we say when something is not pleasant?
Maybe it relates to the red liquid blood in our body. I am not sure.

I have a minor problem in the left ankle. This is due to hard training at the gym. Sometimes I tell my friends that I have a bloody problem in the left ankle because it is going on for about 3 weeks. It doesn't hurt me very much, though.

Hi,
'Bloody' has different meanings.

1. As a 'bad language, swearing' word.
eg I don't like this bloody idea.

2. As a term meaning 'bleeding, covered in blod'.
eg The bandage on his knee was bloody.
eg His nose was bloody because someone punched him hard.

Biut if you simply have a problem with your blood, eg some kind of disease, we'd say 'I have a blood disease' but not 'I have a bloody disease'.
