"He likes sport"

"He likes sports"

What is the difference, if any? Both can be used as plural, but which is correct?

My dictionary says:

In American English "sports" is used to refer collectively to all athletic contests. Many of British people use the collective noun "sport" in this context. Americans find this usage of "sport" to be rather formal.

(BrE) I like sport/sports.
(AmE) I like sports.

In Japan today even dogs are learning how to bow-wow in English.
