 A girl says to a heart-broken man:

"I've had more heroes exit stage left than a great tragedy.

I'm gonna be at O'Mally's after work.

Find me and I'll buy you a cold one."

What do the underlined mean?

"exit stage left"= leave by the left side of the stage as viewed by the cast facing the audience.  The speaker is saying that in classic tragic plays, heroes exit the stage in this way.

"A cold one" = a beer.

Hi,

"I've had more heroes exit stage left than a great tragedy.

As a stage direction, 'exit stage left' is used in many plays.

However, when used in this way in conversation, 'exit stage left' simply means that someone leaves quickly without any explanation.

eg I saw Mary coming, and I really didn't want to talk to her, so I exited stage left.

It's a slightly humorous expression.

Best wishes, Clive
