Is the following understanding correct?
1. He tried to stop his knees trembling. - BrE
2. He tried to stop his knees from trembling. - AmE

#2 is correct for AmE.

I would be very surprised if #1 is correct BrE version.

I think both of them are current in terms of grammar, but they have different meanings

1 implies his knees are being trembling, and he tried to stop that trembling;

2 implies his knees are NOT being trembling, and he tried to prevent his knees from trembling;

The "stop" in 2 is equivalent to prevent, I think...
