What does 'merc' word mean?

YOU DON"T EXPECT THESE MERCS TO HAVE ANY HONOR, ANY CODE.
(The chronicles of Riddick)

Thanks in advance.

It sounds to me like a made-up word that requires the context of the science fiction story it comes from before any real meaning can be assigned to it. Most likely, it means mercenary soldier. That's my guess.

Great, CalifJim, it's exactly a mercenary soldier!

Thanks.
