Hey guys, I'm kind of stuck on this assignment where you have to find a metaphor in a whole 3 paged short story.Surprise [:O]Big Smile [:D]
I've narrowed down the search to some sentences but please help me tell apart which sentence is actually a metaphor, or if none of them are! thanks!

1. The dark clouds that night raced across the sky.
2. The wind whined and moaned through the cracks in the cabin.
3. A flash of light cast the shadow of a raven upon the wall.
4. The rain beat against the window and seeped under the sill.
5. The crying of the wind increased.
6. I leapt to the door and peered outside just as lightning filled the sky.
7. It revealed an overturned boat and a man being tossed out to sea.

Hello Anon

1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 contain "dead" metaphors (i.e. phrases which incorporate metaphors that are so familiar that no one thinks of them as metaphors any more).

3 only contains a metaphor if the raven is unreal.

7 is a doubtful case. "Tossed" may be a dead metaphor; or it may be literal.

All the best,

MrP

___

Edit: By unreal, I mean "if there isn't a real raven".

Yes, I concur with MrPeDantic.

All of them contains metaphors except 3 and 7. If there are larger context given on 3 and 7, then it's easier to decide whether they do or not.

I have been captivated by and lost in a fool's paradise for too long to see the truth.
