Good idea to have this separate forum.
Latin cadere is to fall. When a man falls into a ditch, we say it is an accident. The side the sun falls is the west; we call people living in the west, westerner or occidental. (The people living on the side the sun rises are oriental.)
Accidental and occidental have the same Latin root, cadere, to fall.

I think it is really very good and novel to explain this word in this way. so maybe we can think many different ways to explain english words, and thus it may seem not so difficult to memorize it at all

from a website:
And this is the main disadvantage of Turkey: It is not easy to leave the homelands and fix the own troops in the Occident.
Occident (capital O): The countires of Europe and the Western Hemisphere.
He lives in the Orient; she lives in the Occident. Capital both Os.

Lavatory aft:
Have you seen this sign on an airplane? That is "Restrooms in the back of the airplane." Latin lavare is to wash. Lave, lava, lavish and lavatory all have this same Latin root, lavare, to wash.
Lave - to wash
Lava - volcano's melted rocks
Lavish - extravagant. Have you heard of "spend money like water?"

Nice posts BMO, keep posting them.
Following your comments, I took some Spanish classes for a few months, I loved it, but I gave it up just because I am too lazy! ( A lame excuse, I know!) Anyway, it was so interesting for me to find out about the roots of "dormitory", "adieu", "martyr",.... And yes, knowing the roots makes it a lot easier to learn the words that sound non-English, and difficult to remember!
Cheers,

The similarities among the languages are more than their differences!
