What her fellow inmates will make of her, and she of them, remains to be seen, our correspondent says.

What is the subject for 'remains' ?

1. What her fellow inmates will make of her, and she of them, remains to be seen, our correspondent says.

simple subject = "what"  --- complete subject = "what her fellow inmates will make of her, and she of them,".

I'm including the phrase set off by commas in the singular form of the verb.  Some would disagree, and say that it needs a plural subject [remain], with which I would agree if there were no commas.
