In both of the above posts, miriam has explained the subjunctive in detail but it's all quite confusing to me. I've studied subjuctive from American Heritage and Columbian Guide and they have explained them in a pretty simle manner. They haven't even mixed the subjunctive with the conditionals. But after reading miriams's detailed posts, I am tempted to learn subjunctive in detail. I know subjunctive as follows;
Subjunctives are used in a doubtful, hypthetical and contraty to fact situation. It describes the mood of the speaker. With this definition, I follow the following rules.
Rules of Subjunctive

Rule # 1.
Don't use the final "s" or "es" with third person singular.
If John win (not wins), I will throw a party.
We insist that he do (not does) the job properly.

Rule # 2
Use verb "be" for "is" , "am" and "are" in the present tense.
Their main demand was that the lawsuit be (insted of is) dropped.

Rule # 3
Use were for all forms of verb "to be" in te past tense.
If I were rich.
If they were rich.

Rule # 4
When expressing one's intention or some necessity (especially with that clause), don't use the modal verbs since subjunctive is used to express speaker's attitude.
We insist that we be (not should be) informed of your plans.

Rule # 5:
Use subjunctive with a contratry to fact condition;
If I  were the President of United States, I would have exempted the public of all the taxes.

Rule # 6:
Use subjunctive with wishes;
I wish that his argument were sounder.

Rule # 7:
Use subjunctive with that clauses following verbs such as move, request, command, insist, and the like.
We suggest that the treaty be abrogated.
I urged that he consult a physician.

These are the rules for subjunctive mood that I know. Please correct me if I am wrong. Also if someone knows some other rules, so please post them.
  1. I want to know how we use subjunctive in a sentence which otherwise would take indicative "to do" with it. See the following examples.
They are rewriting the proposal so that it not contradict new zoning laws. (subjunctive)
They are rewriting the proposal so that it does not contradict new zoning laws. (indicative)

    2. Please also explain how to differentiate between conditionals and subjunctive. Where should we use a conditional form and             where to use a conditional.

The best way to learn is to learn from your mistakes.

The other examples you give are still in use. However this one is not, I think. In other words, do not use the "present subjunctive" after "if".
