Which of the following are gramatically correct?

1) Martin suggested her to sell the car.

2) Martin suggests that they went to the cinema.

3) Martin suggested to her sister that she should go to the cinema.

4) Martin suggested her that she should go to the cinema.

5) Martin suggested to her that she should go to the cinema.

3 and 5 are good but personally I would omit should in both cases.

  My try:

1) Martin suggested her to selling the car. or Marting suggessted that she sell the car or Martin suggested that she should sell the car.

2) Martin suggests that they went go to the cinema. or they should go..

3) Martin suggested to her sister that she should go to the cinema.

4) Martin suggested her that she should go to the cinema.

5) Martin suggested to her that she should go to the cinema.

This suggest thing has always confused me. I hope I am correct. :D

Thanks doll but I after  further research, I am now sure 3 and 5 are correct; and 4 is incorrect. You're right about 1 and 2. I appreciate your help.

I thought "suggested her sell the car" or "suggested selling the car to her" where the only possible answers but, the second one sounds weird, it's as if you were saying "I told her to sell the car to another girl". Tongue Tied

Hi,

Would you tell me how you reached the conclusion that 3 is correct, whereas 4 is incorrect? They look identical, except one has 'her sister' and the other has 'her',

I agree with Huevos.  (Welcome to The Forums.)

Since Martin is also a "she," it's not 100% certain which "she" should go, but close enough.

In 1) and 4)"Martin suggested her" requires "to her."  You may say "Martin told/urged her that she should go"  The difference is in the verb.  Part of the definition of the verb is that it takes "to" with the indirect object.  (There's probably a more elegant rule.)

If you eliminate the indirect object, you may say,"Martin suggested [that] she [should] go.

Edit.  I'm beginning to think I'm off base on this.  I wonder if when you use "told/urged," her is actually the direct object rather than the indirect object.

Help!

I also notice my error with "urged."  It should be "Martin urged her to go,"  or  "Martin urged that she should go."
