Hello friends,
I am a an Indian citizen and preparing for exams like GMAT(graduate management aptitude test) and TOEFL(test of English as a foreign language) to be able to pursue higher education in top B-schools of the world. Please suggest me a dictionary which will help me in this specific purpose. I have oxford advanced learner's dictionary but many times I don't find the perfect meaning of phrases or words in it and I get lost in its lengthy explanation of words.

Thanks a lot.

Hi Hitech

I would recommend ''Cambridge advanced learners dictionary". I've been using it for a while now, and it's very useful,

with a  CD-ROM that contains recordings of every word in both British and Americanـــyou can also record your own pronunciation and then compare to either American or British+ smart thesaurus +interactive exercises including exam practice,  I absolutely love it, I'm sure you will too Smile [:)]

* Merriam Webster dictionary  is a very good one as well.

www.m-w.com

on second thought, since you're going to take the TOEFL test, maybe it'd be better if you choose Merriam Webster,,

because they're both American, the test and the Dictionary.

Good luck on your exams Hitesh!!

Thanks a lot Hummingbird, both for your suggestions and your wishes. Thanks for the extra information you gave about pronunciation as developing an American accent will definitely help me. Thanks a lot.

bye n take care.

I took TOEFL and GMAT a couple of years ago and I think you must be much more specific. if you don't have a great vocabulary begin with this book: "504 words" if you are good begin with "the essential words for TOEFL" (barrons).if you can, go and buy them otherwise you can download both on emule.
good luck with you exam.

Yea.. I've got one of Barron's TOEFL preperation books, although it's pretty old, it's still very USEFUL.

so,, yea, barron books would definitely be a smart choice!

Thank you Hummingbird and lifelonglearner,

I appreciate your suggestions, I do have Barron's but it is for GRE. I think the words given in that will be sufficient or should I specifically refer Barron's for TOEFL and GMAT.

One thing I will like to ask you both. Are you Indian or from Indian subcontinent? Moreover, as I am just starting out I will like to know more about GMAT and TOEFL as you have taken these exams before. Can I still apply for US universities for 2008 batch or I should apply for 2009 batch? How much time it takes generally to prepare for GMAT and TOEFL?

Thanks a lot.

Bye n take care.
