To me, suggestion has a more general meaning and perhaps is more commonly used whilst proposal seems to be usually involved in commercial, corporate and political activities. in other words, a proposal is more likely to appear in formal articles. since this may not be true, i'd like to invite some kind comments on the subject issue. tks

To me, a "suggestion" is more "dicreet" than a proposal. Don't forget "proposal" also has the meaning of "asking to marry", and "suggestion" can also be "a state induced by hypnosis".
When you propose something, it's more "formal" than when you suggest it.

I'm glad to help, but I'm not a native! And please excuse my typos...

do u mean "discreet" by dicreet? If so, i dout that. to me, proposal is more like something you arrive at after careful study. for instance, a legislation committee may put forward a propsal for enacting a law. suely they should have worked a long time on that. dont u think so.?

by the way, does proposal collocate with for or on or.....

Yes, I meant "discreet", sorry for the typo...
Have you looked them up in a dictionary?

You're right Vincent, proposal is formal, or a written form of a plan or idea. Good luck,

The similarities among the languages are more than their differences!

Sorry guys, it took me a few hours I guess, to post my SUGGESTION! Anyway, you're on the right track. You also present your proposal to the board of professors at the university on what you've studied and tackled for a while on a subject that you wanna work on for your thesis or dissetation!
