Can anyone confirm to me whether 'best friend' is a superlative as in 'He was the best friend I ever had' because friend looks like it is being used as a noun here?

yes it is a superlative.

Anyway 'friend' is always used as a noun simply because it is a noun and nothing else!

Good point, Francesca! Smile [:)] (There must be something badly wrong with my sense of humour because I find your comment immensely amusing...)

Friend can be a verb.  Check any dictionary.  Usually marked as "archaic".

Words are never always one part of speech.
