I'm looking for a single English word that could describe "Vehicle", "Machinery" and "Engine".

I'm writing a software program that will have a list of vehicles, machineries and engines. I need a common word to describe the content of this list.

As for now these are the ideas:

- Device: Very general, but my first thought is something small, like phone, printer etc.
- Equipment: General, but my first thought is tools or parts of machineries (e.g. "this tank is equipped with a gun")
- Object: This is very abstract

Ideas?

Thanks in advance

Hello Guest

You could try '(fixed) assets' – see this google for a variety of definitions:

Google Definitions of Fixed Assets

Or perhaps 'plant', which is defined in Merriam-Webster as:

2 a : the land, buildings, machinery, apparatus, and fixtures employed in carrying on a trade or an industrial business b : a factory or workshop for the manufacture of a particular product c : the total facilities available for production or service d : the buildings and other physical equipment of an institution

Thanks MrP

I forgot to mention that these items are not my assets but rather my stock (inventory) intended for sales.

The term "Item" is reserved for more global use in my software, so I'm unable to use that.

As English is not my native tongue I don't have enough feeling for terms like "Device". Can you somehow relate that to "Vehicles", "Trucks", "Machineries" and "Engines"?

Any other ideas?

Thanks again,
- Ullur

Hi,

-Materials & Parts

-Parts

If you do an online search for "parts department" you will get several hits. It is common when going to an auto dealership needing parts, you go the service and parts department. Often, it is just called service.

But if you have inventory that is part of a larger piece of equipment, I think "parts" might be your answer.

Hello Ullur, welcome to English Forums!

Tricky. I'm not sure there is a single-word set whose subsets include engines, vehicles, trucks, and machinery. They have 'automotive' in common; but that's an adjective. Mister Micawber's 'heavy equipment' and MountainHiker's 'parts and materials' may be the closest we can get.

The UK tax return includes all your items under 'business plant and machinery', which is why I suggested 'plant'; but I can see that such a word could seem insufficiently intuitive for inventory software.

'Machinery' could be said to include the other terms; but perhaps you've reserved that for something else.

Let's see if anyone else has some good ideas.

I agree that 'machinery' is applicable if not reserved for other use.
'Appliance' is another possibility that comes to mind.

Inventory is always broken down into three categories:

Components

Work in Progress (WIP)

Finished Goods

There are obviously sub-categories to each of these which is what I guess we're looking for here.

From an accounting perspective, if your vehicles, machines etc. are completed and held in inventory for resale they would be classified under finished goods stock as plant & machinery.
