Hello,

A colleague of mine has prepared som multiple choice questions covering tag questions. Since I'm not good at grammar, I'd like to give you the questions so that you can discuss them (the colleague said that's OK). Here we go:

1-You are bored, that’s why you want neither reading books nor watching TV, ......... ?

A)  are you

B) aren’t you

C) do you                             or     ISN’T  IT

D) have you

E) don’t you

2-You don’t know that none of the artefacts which was stolen from the museum has been found yet, ........ ?

     A) wasn’t it
     B) was it
     C) do you
     D) don’t you
     E) has it

3-You needn’t have worried as the doctor tried to do his best during the operation, which lasted for more than

      six hours, ........ ?

     A) didn’t he
     B) needn’t you
     C) did he
     D) didn’t it
     E) did it

4-I presume my grandfather never tells anyone where he keeps his shares because of the fact that he fears lest they

     should be stolen, ......... ?

     A) doesn’t he
     B) should be
     C) does he
     D) shouldn’t be

     E) don’t I

I think the problem is if the tags belong to the main or subordinate clauses.

Another point: Shouldn't it be "could" instead of "should" in number 4?

TIA

I find the sentences are a bit weird, and not quite correct as they stand...

1-You are bored, that’s why you want neither reading books nor watching TV, ......... ?   ... That's why you neither want to read nor watch TV (but IMO reading or watching TV would be a good idea to stop being bored!)

A)  are you

B) aren’t you

C) do you                             or     ISN’T  IT

D) have you

E) don’t you

2-You don’t know that none of the artefacts which was stolen from the museum has been found yet, ........ ?  which were stolen

     A) wasn’t it
     B) was it
     C) do you
     D) don’t you
     E) has it

3-You needn’t have worried as the doctor tried to do his best during the operation I do hope he succeeded! , which lasted for more than

      six hours, ........ ?

     A) didn’t he
     B) needn’t you
     C) did he
     D) didn’t it
     E) did it

4-I presume my grandfather never tells anyone where he keeps his shares because of the fact that he fears lest they

should be stolen, ......... ?  because he fears/for fear they might/would get stolen

     A) doesn’t he
     B) should be
     C) does he
     D) shouldn’t be

     E) don’t I

I think the problem is if the tags belong to the main or subordinate clauses.

Yes, quite so. That's why I would choose: 1-B / 2-C / 3- none / 4-C

Another point: Shouldn't it be "could" instead of "should" in number 4?

TIA

I'd like to see other members'opinion...

I'm glad to help, but I'm not a native! And please excuse my typos...

There are some problems with the sentences themselves.  Most of them are really clunky and are not what a native speaker would say.  It is quite hard to work out what is meant in order to suggest alternatives.

Really, the sentences are too poorly written for us to be able to work out a good answer.

Thanks a lot. By the way, anonymous, grammar is not a skill.
