Can I say,

One sunny day, John was on his way back to home. There were two men who were going to steal the car. They wanted to take away John's father's new car.

 I wouldn't use away there.

Also the sentences don't flow well together. I can't help you further without context, i.e. were the thieves at the same location as John? And was John driving his father's car? Etc?
