I read a sentence the other day: If we do that, there will be a number of guys who would take the fall. what does the speaker mean? Thank you.

Take the fall = suffer the consequences/punishment.  From Dictionary.com:  To incur blame or censure, either willingly or unwillingly: a senior official who took the fall for the failed intelligence operation.
