I just heard on the news that in addition to Swedish and English, which everybody studies here, 15 years ago 50 percent of Finnish 13 to 16-year-olds took a non-mandatory third language in comprehensive schools. Today the figure is down to 14 percent.
The official interviewed thought this an alarming trend and said it impeded students understanding people's behaviour and mentality in other countries. I'm sure it does.
The news bulletin made me wonder what percentage of students study what foreign languages in other countries. At what age do students study them? I'd appreciate any information about this. Thank you!
