His statement was tantamount with a confession?

What is the meaning of `tantamount'. Also please check whether the preposition `with' is correct or wrong in this sentence.

Here is what my dictionary says,

tantamount ---------- having the bad effect as sth else.

(I could not understand the whole sentence)

Could you suggest some good dictionary sites so that I could find out there any other vocabulary?

As heretical as this may sound in this age of high technology, I would suggest a good hard-back printed dictionary.  I use American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, but that wouldn't be the best in England or some other places in the world.
