I teach kids English in Taiwan, and I ask my students not to call me Teacher David, which sounds very Chinglish and grammatically incorrect to me.  A Lot of Chinese teachers say that, too.  I would like to ask all the teachers if you would correct them if someone calls you teacher + your name.

Your advice is appreciated!

David, next time a student calls you "Teacher David", I suggest you tell him/her that he should only apply that honorific when using English among cultures who have agreed to use in such honorifics when speaking English among/between themselves.

This is also interesting information:

"The most common honorific titles are similar to the English Mr, Sir, Mrs, Ms, Miss, Madam, etc. The Chinese titles, unlike in English, are also used to bring people closer rather than to keep distance between one another."

Hume said that if we had perfect or complete descriptive knowledge of reality, we could not, by reasoning, derive a single valid "ought".

your mockery can have already done damage to the credibility of my opinion

What you call mockery I call playfulness.
And anyway, if your opinion is credible, it will remain credible no matter how playfully it is discussed.

<What you call mockery I call playfulness.>

And what you call badgering or attacking is what I would call debate.

Which part of "you have to put aside your English ways of thinking" is "cultural imperialism", Milky?

The "have to" part, obviously.

Totally? So if you're a Native American/American Indian, do you have to think like a Paleface if you want to use English proficiently?

On Indian English:

"It is the reinterpretation of the English language by the Indian people -- a process echoed in Ireland -- that has fascinated visitors from the very beginnings of the British involvement in India."

McCrum et al. The Telegraph, 1986.

Extreme view?

Larry Smith (1983: v) goes so far as to say that 'native English speakers should study English as an international language if they plan to interact in English with non-native speakers or with other native speakers who use a different national variety'.

Is this the goal? If an ESLer thinks like an English person, or like an American, is this the kind of English he/she will produce?

'Users pick what they like from a wide variety of fun looks and music styles and Style Finder returns product suggestions based on individual preferences. Which is just the right feature for users who want what works.'
