hi,
I would like to hear some views from various parties regarding using english-L1 translation in teaching english lessons. Does it help students' understanding if a teacher is to explain english grammatical structures to his or her students? In my country, english is a second language. It is used widely in businesses and private sector. Sadly enough, the present english standard has dropped. Sadly enough, almost all rural schools in my country are experiencing problems with students learning english at school given the fact that the low exposure of rural students to english materials and what not and the environment that they are in is not helpful at all. Do these problems derive from ineffective methodology the teacher applies in his class? I haveNonetheless, the government has placed a great emphasis on english in education including making it as a compulsory subject to pass in a public exam in the future. This has raised a major concern among english teachers in rural schools. To help rural students to learn english lessons, translation is deemed necessary. Among english grammar units which students are struggling to learn are tense shift and subject verb agreement. So what do you think?
